If you like simple things that work well, if you have arthritis or weak hands, if you hate having to replace gadgets every few years, you should buy this can opener.
The Amco Swing-A-Way 609WH Magnetic Wall Can Opener is the can opener I put in the pantry in our first house, because I grew up with one, and knew that it worked perfectly. For 10 years, no problems.
I took it with us when we moved, but we somehow lost the wall-mounting piece, and couldn't use it. When I was unable to find the same can opener, I purchased an electric can opener. Then another one, because the first was hard to use. Then another one because the second one broke.
I was amazed to discover that so many electric can openers are tricky to use -- positioning the can is difficult, the can is only opened partway, the can falls off the opener, the opener stops working -- all kinds of unexpected issues. Electricity is supposed to remove the effort, but I found these hard on my hands and very frustrating to use.
Portable manual can openers that I have tried are hard on my hands, too, because they typically have pretty short handles, and you have to apply effort to open the can (no long lever to help you out). I see that Amco has a portable opener that looks better than most: Amco Swing-A-Way 6090 Easy Crank Can Opener. It has a nice long cranking handle, like the wall mounted one, so if you can't imagine mounting the opener on the wall, you might try this one.
5 years ago, when I found the good old Amco Swing-A-Way 609WH Magnetic Wall Can Opener on Amazon, I ordered two. Just in case. The first one is still working great -- I came back to this page because I am purchasing one as a gift. I figure that the one I have and a spare should probably see me out...
